How do I get my water fountain to work? ›

Check for any blockage restricting the pump's intake. Unplug the pump then expose the trap door to check the intake of the pump (black cage). Remove any debris from exterior of cage, & the throat of the pump intake. Turn pump back on to test flow.

Gently tighten a worm drive clamp around the flexible tube that brings water into the pump. Make sure this is done without damaging the tube. Close it enough so that the water flow is restricted but not so much that the water flow stops. Loosen or tighten the clamp as needed to get the desired flow rate.

Fountains work best when they are left running. Shutting off a fountain overnight may save you a few dollars in energy costs, but it leaves behind stagnant water that encourages bacterial overgrowth. Keeping the Fountain On 24/7

We don't recommend keeping your fountain on 24/7. This is because fountains running for longer periods of time are more susceptible to water loss from wind, splash, evaporation, etc. This can result in a low water level, which therefore can cause strain on the pump.

You'll need a nearby electric outlet to run the pump. If you prefer to locate the fountain in a more remote area of your garden, you can hire an electrician to run wiring and install a GCFI outlet. Otherwise, place the fountain near a patio or close to a window where you can enjoy it up close.

The majority of water features work in the same way: the water is stored in the reservoir which contains the water while it's not moving through the feature, and a pump is necessary to move the water, usually against gravity. Next you'll see it flowing down as gravity brings it back down to the reservoir.

Drain Water from the Fountain

Many fountains will come with quick-drain features that will allow you to simply open a valve and let the water naturally drain out. If this is not an option on your fountain, you can also employ a bucket to catch the water as it comes through the spigot.

Use your garden hose to spray down the sides and bottom of the fountain, ensuring the dirty water drains thoroughly through the plug. Again, if you don't have a plug, you'll have to remove the water using a siphon or scoop. Once you're done rinsing, reinsert the plug before refilling the water.
