    What are the wines like?

The Alicante wine route will show you the quality of its wines and its local varieties. Wines that are well-balanced, being both fruity yet intensely bitter and spicy. In the province of Alicante you will find varieties such as: Alicante red wine, mainly based on Monastrell; Moscatel Alicante, sweet liqueur wine; noble and aged wines, sparkling wines and the region's flagship, Fondillón wine. The latter is among the wines with the longest history in the world, and has a complex production process, which is why very few wineries produce it nowadays.

    What I can find

An extensive historical and artistic heritage with monuments such as the Castle of Petrer, the Modernist House Museum and the Muca Algueña. Traditional gastronomy with innovative touches. In the Vinalopó region, dishes worth special mention include rice with rabbit, snails with vine shoots, Manchego gazpacho, cured meats and sausages and typical pastas. In the Marina Alta area you should not miss their cured meats and sausages, “espencat”, “cocas” and paella. Experience typical festivals such as the Festival of Moors and Christians, Easter Week and the local Fiestas Mayores, where the different municipalities are filled with colour, music, parades and various activities. For more information, enquire at any of the tourist offices.

    How to get here

Alicante is bordered to the north by the province of Valencia, to the northwest by Albacete and to the southwest by the Region of Murcia. Any of the wine-producing municipalities can be reached via the A-3 motorway (Madrid-Alicante), as well as national, regional and local roads. This is complemented by a wide range of connections on bus lines and taxi services. If you prefer to fly, the route features a modern airport: The Altet. The train is also a great option, because the high-speed train (AVE) takes you to the stations in Villena and Alicante. The Alicante designation of origin is present in almost all municipalities, but the most deeply rooted producing areas with the greatest significance in excellent wine production are to be found in the municipalities of the Marina Alta (Alcalalí, Benigembla, Benissa, Castells de Castells, Xaló, Llíber, Murla, Parcent and Sénija), of the Marina Baja (Alfás del Pi) and of the Vinalopó region (Algueña, Elche, Monóvar, Novelda, Petrer, Pinoso, Salinas and Villena).
